OB-GYN Arthur Park faces jury in deaths of Demi Dominguez and her newborn
Jurors awarded $9.25 million after hearing claims that Park missed warning signs of severe preeclampsia in the deaths of Demi Dominguez and her newborn son.
On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, a Bakersfield jury found former OB-GYN Arthur Park negligent in the 2019 deaths of Demi Dominguez and her newborn son, Malakhi De Leon, awarding $9,250,000 in total damages.
Dominguez died April 19, 2019, three days after being discharged from Mercy Southwest Hospital while nearly 32 weeks pregnant, with the case centered on preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication that can lead to seizures.
Family attorney Courtney Rowley presented nursing records documenting elevated blood pressure during trial, though Park testified he never received notification of the readings and disputed that his care caused the deaths.
Jurors awarded $6,250,000 to Ruben Xavier DeLeon, fiancé of Demi Dominguez, for the loss of his son, Malakhi, and $3 million to Tracy Dominguez, mother of Demi Dominguez, for the loss of her daughter.
Michele Monserratt Ramos, the Kathy Olsen Patient Advocate with Consumer Watchdog, emphasized the 'difficult journey' of the last seven years, noting that advocacy for medical negligence law changes aims to help other families in the Central Valley.
