NYPD touts removing 3,200+ guns off NYC streets so far this year

Police said the seizures helped drive shootings and murders to record lows, with 381 shooting incidents and 462 shooting victims through July.

  • On Tuesday, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced the department has seized 3,259 illegal firearms since January, a major enforcement benchmark as shootings across New York City reach historic lows.
  • Marking its fifth anniversary, the Gun Violence Strategies Partnership coordinates daily meetings among more than 30 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to identify repeat offenders driving violence.
  • Among the weapons seized, 199 were so-called "ghost guns" lacking traceable serial numbers, often created through 3D-printing technology. These untraceable firearms represent about 6 percent of this year's total seizures.
  • Five defendants connected to the Bloods gang pleaded guilty to trafficking 40 guns in Far Rockaway, Queens. U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Joseph Nocella Jr. noted the gang sold weapons in apartments occupied by children.
  • Citywide shooting incidents fell 7.5 percent through July to 381, while murders dropped 22.8 percent during the same period. The NYPD maintains focus on the small number of repeat offenders responsible for the majority of violent crime.
