Nvidia Confirms It Will Back 4.25GW of OpenAI Capacity at Ports-Pike Mega Data Center
Nvidia is expected to back only the first phase after investors raised concerns about its risk exposure from large financing commitments.
On Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Nvidia Corp scaled back its planned financial support for an OpenAI data center project in Ohio, reducing its expected guarantee to less than $120 billion from the $250 billion previously discussed.
The massive 10-gigawatt facility is being developed by SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group Corp, to support OpenAI's computing needs while the companies negotiate a binding lease for the Ohio project.
Nvidia reportedly reduced its guarantee after investors raised concerns about the company's risk exposure tied to large financing commitments, as the chipmaker pursues broader infrastructure financing opportunities.
On August 10, Nvidia announced partnerships with BlackRock, Blackstone, and Goldman Sachs to launch compute financing platforms aimed at raising more than $500 billion in third-party capital for artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Separately, a regulatory filing disclosed on Friday revealed Nvidia holds a nearly $21 billion stake in Elon Musk's Space Exploration Technologies Corp and a $30 billion investment in Intel Corp.
