Nvidia Is Building a Computer for AI Data Centers in Space

Nvidia's new module integrates advanced chips for orbital AI centers to leverage abundant solar power and reduce terrestrial energy demands, partners include Axiom Space and Starcloud.

  • On Monday at GTC, Nvidia revealed the Vera Rubin Space-1 Module, which combines IGX Thor and Jetson Orin to enhance AI processing for satellites and space platforms.
  • Rising power costs have pushed interest in orbital AI data centers, fueled by Elon Musk's xAI-SpaceX merger last month and regulatory filings for 1 million satellites.
  • The Vera Rubin Module contains a Rubin architecture GPU promising up to a 25-times performance leap over the H100 GPU, and partners include Axiom Space, Starcloud, and Planet Labs, who have tested Nvidia hardware in orbit.
  • Nvidia said the Space-1 Vera Rubin Module is not yet available but expects to reach customers in the near future and has begun recruiting an Orbital Datacenter System Architect.
  • Technical hurdles such as radiation exposure and thermal management include cooling challenges, with Jensen Huang, Nvidia CEO, warning 'In space, there's no convection, there's just radiation'; scientists and critics also raise concerns about radiation, extreme temperatures and debris risks from the 1 million-satellite proposal.
