Nigerian Railway Corporation Says Wheel Defect, Brake Application Possibly Caused Fatal Warri-Itakpe Train Accident

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has revealed that the June 8 derailment of the Warri–Itakpe Train Service at Owa-Oyibu, near the Goodluck Jonathan Railway Station in Delta State, may have resulted from a sudden bogie and wheel defect that developed while the train was in motion. The Corporation disclosed this in its preliminary report on the incident, stating that the possible defect was identified as a potential cause of the derailment.

Opeifa revealed that emergency response operations were immediately activated by the NRC in collaboration with the Delta State Government, Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, National Emergency Management Agency, local authorities and medical teams.
