Novak Djokovic loses in opening round of US Open for first time, falling in 5 sets to Mariano Navone

Navone outlasted the 24-time Grand Slam champion in four hours and 36 minutes, ending Djokovic’s bid for a record 25th major title.

  • On Sunday, Mariano Navone upset Novak Djokovic in the US Open first round, winning 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, 2-6, 1-6 in a 4.5-hour marathon at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The victory eliminated the 24-time major winner.
  • The 39-year-old Serb's physical condition deteriorated throughout the match as he vomited on court and committed 70 unforced errors, snapping his 78-match first-round winning streak at Grand Slams dating to 2006.
  • "I think it actually turns out better for him because it shows he's human," John McEnroe said on ESPN. Despite the crowd roaring for the Serb during the fifth set, Navone capitalized on exhaustion.
  • Navone, an Argentinean ranked No. 49, advances to face the winner of the Matteo Berrettini and Stan Wawrinka match on Sept 2. This marks only the third opening-round loss in Djokovic's career.
  • With Djokovic eliminated, the US Open continues without any of "The Big 3" in the second week, a rarity since 2003. Top-seeded Alexander Zverev and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz remain frontrunners.
