Nova Scotia’s New Seafood Strategy Aims to Address Rising Costs, Labour Shortages
The plan sets aside $1.5 million this year for an applied research hub and targets market diversification as the sector faces higher costs.
On Wednesday, the Nova Scotia government announced a three-year strategy to grow its $2.2 billion seafood industry, developed with input from industry representatives.
Fisheries Minister Kent Smith stated the initiative aims to help the sector address rising costs, labor shortages, and global trade challenges facing seafood producers.
Smith unveiled $1.5 million in funding this year to establish an innovation hub dedicated to applied research in the seafood sector.
Offering up to $4 million over three years, the strategy supports product diversification and helps companies expand into new global markets.
Employing about 19,000 people in 2025, the seafood industry remains Nova Scotia's top exporter, generating $2.2 billion in revenue last year.
