Nottingham Forest Lodge Plans to Take Ground Capacity over 50,000

Owner Evangelos Marinakis plans a sustainable design to boost City Ground capacity to over 50,000, supporting Nottingham's economic growth, with construction possibly starting in 2027.

  • On Monday, Nottingham Forest Football Club submitted planning applications to increase the City Ground, Nottingham's capacity to more than 50,000, formally lodging the plans with local authorities.
  • Driven by significant private investment from owner Evangelos Marinakis, Forest first unveiled plans in 2019 and Rushcliffe Borough Council previously approved a smaller 35,000-capacity expansion.
  • With the revised vision the City Ground could reach 52,000, initially targeting 45,000, while the current capacity is about 30,000 and design partners Gleeds, KSS Design Group, Buro Happold, and Savills supported a `sustainable and iconic` plan.
  • If approved, enabling works would begin this summer with main construction slated for 2027, and the club said it will work with the Mayor of the East Midlands, Rushcliffe Borough Council, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council in the near future.
  • Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands, has framed the project as the `centrepiece` of a regional `Trent Sports Quarter` including Trent Bridge Cricket Ground, Meadow Lane, and the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont Country Park.
