Iceland signed an agreement with three other countries this morning on the division and management of the mackerel stock. For a long time, other countries have not recognized Iceland's status as a coastal state for mackerel. The CEO of the Icelandic Fisheries Association says the agreement is biased against Icelandic companies.
Industry groups express strong disappointment over mackerel agreement
The Federation of Icelandic Fishing Vessel Owners (SFS) has expressed strong disappointment with the new mackerel agreement, saying it significantly reduces Iceland’s share of the fishery. The organisation also points out that the agreement is only valid until 2028 and does not constitute a comprehensive coastal states agreement, as both Greenland and the European Union are excluded.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs says it is a victory to have neighboring countries recognize Iceland's status as a coastal state with a share in the mackerel fishery.
