US signs deal to boost output of parts for Patriot, THAAD interceptor systems
The framework agreement will triple Patriot output and quadruple THAAD production as U.S. stockpiles come under pressure from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
- On Monday, the Defense Department signed a framework deal with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman to expand production capacity for Patriot PAC-3 and THAAD missile interceptor systems.
- Pentagon negotiators pushed for faster production due to conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, where Patriot interceptors remain critical for ballistic missile defense.
- The Army awarded Lockheed Martin up to $58.6 billion last week for Patriot interceptors, while Northrop Grumman announced its share of the new agreement exceeds $3bn.
- Production capacity for Patriot and THAAD systems will triple and quadruple respectively. "Building the Arsenal of Freedom requires robust, dynamic supply chains," said Undersecretary Michael P. Duffey.
- Northrop Grumman rose more than 1 percent in early trading, while Lockheed gained 0.7 per cent. Ben Davies, corporate vice president of Northrop Grumman, said long-term investments enable the company to pivot to a production surge.
