Northern Lights Could Appear over UK Tonight - when and Where to See Them
A solar flare from sunspot region AR4436 has raised the chance of aurora sightings, with northern Scotland offering the best view, the Met Office said.
The Met Office forecast that the Northern Lights may be visible across parts of the UK tonight, with Northern Scotland standing the greatest chance of observing the spectacular display.
A substantial solar flare erupted from sunspot region AR4436 on Sunday, propelling billions of tonnes of solar plasma toward Earth as a coronal mass ejection that departed the Sun at approximately 1:30 p.m. on May 10.
This year marks a once-in-a-decade solar maximum, an exceptional event where the Sun experiences heightened magnetic activity that scientists anticipate will reach its peak before gradually declining until the mid-2030s.
Meteorological conditions appear uncertain, as a low-pressure system delivers waves of rainfall across the region, making it crucial whether stargazers manage to catch a glimpse of the spectacle.
Auroral activity remains at background levels, though a glancing CME may arrive early today; additionally, the Met Office expects coronal hole fast winds on May 15 to potentially enhance the auroral oval.
