North Cowichan Freeman Dave Haywood dies
Haywood served 11 years on North Cowichan council and was one of 13 people to receive Freedom of the Municipality.
Former North Cowichan councillor and school trustee David Haywood passed away on Oct 7, with flags at North Cowichan facilities lowered to half-mast in his honour.
Before his time with the Municipality, Haywood served 10 years on the School District board of trustees, then was first elected to North Cowichan council in 1999, serving 11 years as a councillor.
Haywood supported recreational development including the Cowichan Exhibition, Cowichan Sportsplex, Evans Park, and the Duncan Curling Club, while serving six years each on the Island Savings Centre Commission and Vancouver Island Regional Library Board.
In 2023, Haywood became one of just 13 people in the Municipality's 150-year history to receive Freedom of the Municipality, the highest symbol of respect and esteem from local government to an individual.
After retiring from the Crofton Mill in 2000, Haywood mentored new councillors and shared wise advice; Mayor Rob Douglas offered condolences to the family, highlighting his legacy of service.
