Billy Edwards Jr. Helps UNC Beat No. 25 Pitt 21-17, Gives Belichick First Win Against a Ranked Foe
Edwards finished with 249 passing yards and two touchdowns as North Carolina handed Pitt its first loss and Belichick his first ranked win at UNC.
On Saturday, North Carolina Tar Heels upset No. 25 Pittsburgh 21-17, securing head coach Bill Belichick his biggest college win in five games of his second season.
Belichick returned to Acrisure Stadium, where he posted an 8-3 NFL record, to face Pittsburgh Panthers led by backup quarterback Holden Geriner. Geriner made his first collegiate start after Mason Heintschel tore his ACL last week.
North Carolina quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Shamar Easter in the fourth quarter, giving the Tar Heels a go-ahead lead. Demon June also rushed for a touchdown.
Pittsburgh failed to convert on a fourth-and-2 with about 2 minutes remaining, allowing the Tar Heels to hold on for the victory. The previously undefeated Panthers fell to 5-1.
North Carolina will visit rival Duke on Oct. 17, while Pittsburgh travels to Boston College the same day. Belichick said the upcoming Duke matchup is "another big one" for his program.
