Nonprofit sues US as it pushes to auction massive tracks of water around American Samoa
Earthjustice says the plan would cover 33 million acres of seabed and could harm endangered species and critical habitat.
Earthjustice sued the U.S. government over plans to auction large ocean areas around American Samoa for deep-sea mining.
The lawsuit names the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and represents Fa'asao Amerika Samoa and the Conservation Council for Hawai‘i.
The lawsuit argues that the U.S. must prevent destruction of critical habitats and species before allowing deep-sea mining, as no commercial seabed mining operation currently exists anywhere in the world.
The Samoan people depend on a healthy ocean for food, shoreline protection, and cultural traditions.
