No delay to MetroLink after director's departure
Transport Infrastructure Ireland said procurement will continue and construction is still due to begin next year.
- On Thursday, MetroLink Programme Director Sean Sweeney announced his resignation after less than two years leading Dublin's long-awaited underground rail project.
- The 67-year-old New Zealander cited the sacrifice of being separated from family over 10,000 miles away as unsustainable, though he described leaving with "deep regret" as the right decision.
- During his tenure, the project secured the Operational Railway Order in January 2026 and moved into procurement phase with £2 billion in Government-backed funding.
- Transport Infrastructure Ireland chief executive Lorcan O'Connor confirmed Deputy Project Director Michael Flynn will assume interim leadership, stating procurement and construction would "not at all" be delayed.
- Enabling works are expected this year, with full construction beginning next year and completion anticipated in the mid-2030s, despite cost estimates of around £11 billion for the 18.8km route.
