Ticket Prices Lowered for NJ Transit, NYC Bus Going to World Cup Games
The fare cuts follow backlash over World Cup transit costs and come as NJ Transit says it faces nearly $50 million in added expenses.
On Tuesday, New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced price reductions for World Cup transportation to MetLife Stadium, with Sherrill lowering NJ Transit train fares to $98 and Hochul cutting bus shuttle tickets to $20.
Sherrill secured corporate donations from DoorDash, Audible, and FanDuel to avoid taxpayer funding, while Hochul invested $6 million in state funds to subsidize bus fares amid public outcry over soaring World Cup costs.
Tickets go on sale via the NJ Transit mobile app starting Wednesday, May 13, at midnight, with the agency planning to move more than 78,000 spectators per match and offering 40,000 roundtrip train tickets daily.
Sherrill pressured FIFA to contribute more funding, noting the Switzerland-based organization anticipates $11 billion in profit and arguing that residents should not bear exorbitant hosting costs alone.
Shuttle buses will depart from the Port Authority Bus Terminal and the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, while officials implement a diversion plan at Penn Station to manage spectator flow when matches begin in June.
