Nintendo's Back in VR With a New Virtual Boy, Coming Next Year for Switch
Nintendo will offer 14 Virtual Boy games via Switch Online Expansion Pack, releasing a $100 accessory and $25 cardboard version on Feb 17 to celebrate Mario's 40th anniversary.
- On Feb. 17, 2026, Nintendo will ship the Virtual Boy Nintendo Classics edition accessory and retro games for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 via Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
- Amid nostalgia for the often-overlooked Virtual Boy, the company unveiled the revival during Mario's 40th anniversary Direct livestream Friday, noting fans relied on rare hardware or unofficial emulators to play the original Virtual Boy which sold fewer than 800,000 units.
- Nintendo says it will roll out 14 Virtual Boy titles over time, including first-party classics Virtual Boy Wario Land, Mario's Tennis, and rare third-party games like Jack Bros. and Virtual Bowling, playable via the Virtual Boy Nintendo Classics edition accessory.
- Nintendo will sell a full plastic accessory for $100 and a cardboard version for $25, and the company says the accessory and Classic Virtual Boy games will be available only in the US and Canada and require Nintendo Switch consoles plus the accessory to play.
- By officially acknowledging the Virtual Boy, Nintendo is reframing a neglected part of Nintendo history and bringing most of the Virtual Boy library to Nintendo Switch, preserving rare titles.
