Nikola Dzepina and LeJuan Watts lead Washington to 90-76 win over Colgate
Nikola Dzepina scored a career-high 27 points, and Washington made 30 of 36 free throws to pull away in the second half.
On Monday, the Washington Huskies defeated Colgate 90-76 in their season opener, with sophomore Nikola Dzepina scoring a career-high 27 points and LeJuan Watts adding 22 to overcome a tight first half.
The game occurred during the Seattle Seahawks-Chicago Bears Monday Night Football broadcast, drawing only 548 fans to the pavilion. Head coach Danny Sprinkle said the team brought their own energy despite the sparse crowd.
Dzepina scored 17 of his 27 points in the second half, shooting 10 of 17 from the floor with seven rebounds. Watts contributed largely at the foul line, making 14 of 16 free throws while attempting just six field goals.
Wesley Yates III hit 3 of 6 three-pointers, including a 25-foot shot before halftime, while Sprinkle rotated 10 players to manage the game's tempo and address early-season injuries.
Washington will host Mississippi Valley State next Monday after a week of preparation. Meanwhile, Colgate travels to Drexel on Saturday as the Huskies seek to improve from their recent.500-or-worse record in five of the last seven seasons.
