Nigeria's Domestic Airfares Cheapest Globally - Allen Onyema
- On Sunday, Allen Onyema said Nigeria's domestic airfares are the cheapest in the world and noted tickets cost as low as 115,000 naira, less than $60 during an ARISE NEWS interview.
- On taxation, Onyema said heavy levies squeeze domestic airlines, noting from a 350,000 naira ticket only 81,000 naira reaches the airline, and `The rest goes to taxes and levies`.
- Operationally, Onyema highlighted Air Peace recorded 49 bird strikes Jan–Sep this year and cited costly ground-handler damage to a brand-new plane bought with over $85 million and an engine costing about $18 million.
- The regulator rebutted the tax claims, stating on X that allegations are misleading, no domestic airline pays 18 taxes, and current high fares reflect market forces, demand and supply.
- Onyema warned the new tax regime could push airfares higher and called for regulatory changes allowing airlines to manage their own ground handling operations to improve safety and efficiency.
