Nigerians in Darkness As National Grid Collapses Again
The national grid failure left most distribution companies without power, with only Ibadan and Abuja DisCos receiving 30 MW and 20 MW respectively, showing critical system fragility.
- On Monday, the national electricity grid collapsed, and distribution figures at 3:12pm showed supply to DisCos fell drastically, leaving Nigerians in darkness.
- The collapse follows a pattern of repeated grid failures in recent years, and neither the Transmission Company of Nigeria nor the Federal Ministry of Power has issued an official cause or timeline.
- DisCo figures show only two operators had any supply: Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company recorded 30 megawatts and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company received 20 megawatts while other DisCos received zero megawatts.
- Total nationwide generation dropped to just 50 megawatts, leaving homes, businesses and essential services underpowered, and the Nigerian National Grid said restoration efforts were underway.
- The collapse highlights long-standing fragility in Nigeria's power system, with Benin Electricity Distribution Company, Eko Electricity Distribution Company, and others recording zero supply, underscoring nationwide failure.
