Nigeria: Lagos Police Begin Enforcement of Tinted Glass Regulations

The Federal High Court in Warri has issued an interim order halting tinted glass permit enforcement amid legal challenges over constitutionality and claims of police harassment.

  • On Thursday, the Lagos State Police Command began implementing regulations on vehicle tinted glass, following orders from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
  • The enforcement came after legal disputes, including a Federal High Court case initiated by Delta-based lawyer John Aikpokpo-Martins challenging the police chief and the Nigeria Police Force, as well as a lawsuit filed by the Nigerian Bar Association claiming the policy violates the law.
  • Although the Federal High Court in Warri ordered the police to halt enforcement and uphold the current situation pending further legal action, the Nigeria Police Force has indicated that the court order has yet to be formally delivered to them.
  • Senior Advocate Kunle Edun described the court's interim order in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025 as a major step to ensure the rule of law while substantive issues are determined.
  • The Lagos Police emphasized the exercise aims to enhance public safety, curb crime, and enforce compliance, while providing complaint channels and pledging professionalism during enforcement.
