Romania is allowing the launch of up to 969 bears this year. The government is reacting to numerous attacks - despite criticism by animal protectionists and resistance of the President.
President Nicousor Dan passed the law allowing immediate intervention to prevent and combat bear attacks on individuals and their property, as well as doubling the number of bears shot for the years 2026 and 2027, from almost 500 to almost 1,000 copies for both prevention and intervention. In May, Nicousor Dan attacked the law at the Constitutional Court, but the referral was rejected by the judges in June 2026.
Nicușor Dan has signed the decree that brings new rules for intervention in the case of brown bear attacks. The law amends OUG no. 81/2021 and aims to allow the authorities to act more effectively to protect people and goods.
