Nicolas Cage Confesses He Changed His Name
The Oscar winner said he changed the name for a shorter, more distinctive stage identity after years of using it professionally.
Actor Nicolas Cage legally changed his name from Nicolas Kim Coppola to Nicolas Cage last year, he revealed in a Variety interview published on Wednesday.
Seeking to establish an identity free from his famous Hollywood relatives, Cage adopted the surname early in his career to avoid being known as the 'clown cousin' of uncle Francis Ford Coppola.
Inspired by Marvel Comics character Luke Cage and avant-garde composer John Cage, he sought a 'short and sweet' name similar to James Dean to forge his distinct path.
Emphasizing his unified identity, Cage stated, 'I'm Nick Cage in life, and I'm Nick Cage on camera,' asserting his role as patriarch of his own family.
The 62-year-old star continues his high-profile career, recently appearing in Spider-Noir and Longlegs, while remaining comfortable with fans using either 'Nick' or 'Nicolas'.
