Nicola Sturgeon Says Operation Branchform Has Not 'Soured' Her
Nicola Sturgeon says the investigation into SNP fund spending made her a stronger and happier person despite resigning and stepping down as MSP after 27 years.
Nicola Sturgeon steps down as an MSP this week, ending a 27-year career representing Glasgow at Holyrood. She leaves frontline politics but intends to campaign for Scottish independence if a referendum arises.
Police Scotland launched Operation Branchform in 2021 to investigate SNP fund spending. Sturgeon was arrested in June 2023 as part of the probe but was subsequently released without charge and cleared.
Her estranged husband, Peter Murrell, was charged with embezzling £459,000 from the SNP over 12 years. He is due to appear in court again in May.
Speaking to the Press Association, Sturgeon insisted the investigation has not "soured" her. She described feeling "contented," adding she is "probably a happier person having gone through the last few years."
The former Scottish first minister plans to take time to "decompress" and find a "different rhythm to life." She confirmed she will not remain silent on issues she cares about.
