Neymar Gets 2-Match Ban for Covering Mouth While Confronting Opponent
Brazil’s sports tribunal said Neymar’s gesture violated the Vinícius Law and left him out for three matches, including one for yellow-card accumulation.
On Wednesday, Brazil's Superior Court of Sports Justice handed Santos captain Neymar a 2-match suspension for covering his mouth during Saturday's match against Bahia midfielder Rodrigo Nestor.
The tribunal found Neymar guilty of violating the 'Vinicius Law,' named after teammate Vinicius Junior, which prohibits covering mouths during confrontations to prevent alleged abuse.
Additionally, the referee's report noted Neymar 'ran towards the visiting team's bench to confront his rival' after receiving his red card, requiring teammate intervention.
Neymar's suspension totals three matches, as he was already banned for Wednesday's league game against Palmeiras due to accumulated yellow cards.
While Neymar and Santos can appeal the ruling, the forward is not expected to return to action until late November.
Neymar was suspended on Wednesday two games because he covered his mouth while arguing with an opponent during a Brazilian championship match, reports AP.
