Newsom Asks Trump to Work With Him on $7.5 Billion Tax Credit for Hollywood
On May 6, 2025, California Governor Gavin Newsom suggested partnering with President Donald Trump to establish a $7.5 billion federal incentive aimed at boosting domestic movie production.
This proposal follows Trump's May 4 announcement of 100% tariffs on movies produced overseas, aimed at reversing the decline of U.S. film production.
Newsom aims to establish a federal partnership inspired by California's plans to more than double its state tax credit for film and television production to $750 million per year.
Newsom stated he is "ready to bring even more jobs home" and tweeted directly at Trump to advance the national incentive, but the White House has made no response yet.
If enacted, the federal credit would represent a significant unified U.S. effort to counter foreign subsidies and bolster entertainment industry jobs nationwide.
