The popular joy that ignited Cameroon on 12 October, from Douala to Yaoundé to Bafoussam and the Diaspora, gave way to an alarming wave of repression. The vision of a people expressing their will in the ballot box was quickly obscured by a democratic setback as sudden as it was brutal. The genuine joy of opposition supporters, who saw the results as a massive vote in favour of their candidate, turned into a nightmare in just one week.
