Marcel Niat Njifenji, Cameroon’s pioneer senate president who ruled the institution for 13 years, has died one month after he was replaced, Abdoulaye Aboubakary, the new Senate leader said in an emailed statement. Njifenji, 91, who led the upper chamber from 2013 to 2026, died in a hospital after a protracted illness.

Marcel Niat Njifenji, former and first President of the Senate and close collaborator of the head of state Paul Biya, died on Saturday 11 April 2026 in Yaoundé, at the age of 92.
