Newfoundland and Labrador pulls out of talks about national marine conservation area
The Progressive Conservative government cited risks to aquaculture, fishing, and mining, ending a 2023 agreement that aimed to protect nearly 6,500 km of coastal ecosystem.
- On Tuesday, the Newfoundland and Labrador Progressive Conservative government ended talks and terminated the MOU with Ottawa, according to Chris Tibbs.
- The MOU, signed in June 2023, involved Miawpukek First Nation, Qalipu First Nation, and governments to study feasibility, covering nearly 6,500 kilometres along Newfoundland's south coast fjords.
- The Newfoundland and Labrador Aquaculture Industry Association warned the marine area risked `crippling the local economy on the south coast`, while Green said inquiries went unanswered before Tuesday's cancellation call.
- The move effectively stalls the Parks Canada feasibility study, Brad Benoit, chief of Miawpukek First Nation, said he believes the project is `dead in the water`, putting Sandbanks Provincial Park redesignation at risk.
- The Progressive Conservatives had pledged before the October election that they would pull out of the agreement, which contrasts with the federal government's 30 by 2030 conservation target and the area's role as summering habitat for over a quarter of the global beluga population.
