New survey shows 5-way gridlock in California governor's race

Five candidates are within a 4-point range in a PPIC poll, reflecting voter concerns about affordability and a split Democratic field before California’s June primary.

  • On Wednesday, the Public Policy Institute of California found five candidates in a statistical dead heat among likely voters in the race to replace termed-out Gov. Gavin Newsom, based on a survey of 1,657 adults.
  • Voters say affordability is decisive, and 61% of likely voters find candidates' plans very important as nine Democrats raise concerns about a split vote in the June 2 primary.
  • PPIC's survey of 1,657 Californians shows Hilton at 14%, Porter 13%, Bianco 12%, Swalwell 11% and Steyer 10%, within the margin of error.
  • Party leaders are now pressing lower-polling candidates to drop out as the bottom six candidates claim 30% support and the California Democratic Party convention failed to unite behind one candidate.
  • Three months out, the June 2 primary positions wealthy donors and unions to decide which campaigns survive amid a race heated by a proposed 5% billionaires tax backed by SEIU-UHW and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
