New south gate marks start of Sentinel work at Malmstrom
The gate will separate Sentinel construction from Minuteman III operations as the Air Force plans new silos, utilities and maintenance facilities.
Malmstrom Air Force Base leaders broke ground Thursday on a new South Gate, marking the first construction dedicated to the Sentinel program at the installation.
Sentinel will replace the aging Minuteman III system, serving as the land-based leg of the nuclear triad through 2075, while the new gate separates construction traffic from daily base operations.
"This gate will enable us to continue to operate Minuteman III safely and securely," said Col. Daniel Voorhies, 341st Missile Wing commander, during the ceremony.
Ed Brown, CEO of the Great Falls Area Chamber, expects the multi-year project to bring new opportunities to the community, though growth brings traffic challenges.
The Great Falls Area Chamber will host a live session at 11:30 a.m. on Friday featuring the Sentinel Task Force Commander, while environmental assessments continue for future infrastructure work.
