New SMU Master's Programme Prepares Talent for AI-Driven Economic Roles
The curriculum combines econometrics, AI and data science, and applications are open for the inaugural August 2026 intake.
On Monday, Singapore Management University launched the Master of Data Science in Economics , Singapore's first program integrating data science and economics to meet rising global demand for professionals with AI and domain expertise.
The MDSE addresses a structural talent gap by emphasizing interpretation of AI models rather than just building them, with specific focus on causal inference and predictive uncertainty in complex economic datasets.
Daniel Preve, Associate Professor of Economics and Programme Director, said graduates learn to apply data science and machine learning to real-world economic questions, positioning them "well-positioned across a wide range of roles."
Applications for the inaugural August 2026 intake are now open, with graduates expected to pursue careers as data scientists, economic analysts, and policy specialists across financial services, government, and technology sectors.
This launch expands SMU's portfolio of practice-oriented, AI-related postgraduate programs, which include the region's first technology-focused Doctor of Business Administration offered jointly with Fudan University and the Master of Science in Business AI.
