New weight loss pill approved for use in UK
The once-daily GLP-1 tablet is prescription-only and is licensed for adults with obesity or weight-related conditions, plus some patients with type 2 diabetes.
- On Monday, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency authorized Eli Lilly's once-daily pill, Orforglipron , making the first country in Europe to approve the drug for weight loss and type 2 diabetes.
- Orforglipron is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics naturally occurring hormones to regulate appetite and lower blood sugar levels. It acts on areas of the brain that regulate appetite, helping patients feel fuller for longer.
- Treatment begins at 0.8 mg, escalating through 2.5 mg, 5.5 mg, 9 mg, 14.5 mg, and 17.2 mg, with one month at each dose level. Unlike Wegovy, Orforglipron can be taken at any time with no food or water restrictions.
- Although approved, the medication is not currently available via the NHS, as decisions regarding public funding require evaluation by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence . All GLP-1 medicines remain prescription-only.
- The drug is licensed for adults with a Body Mass Index of 30 or above, or those with a BMI of 27–30 plus a weight-related condition. Patients should report side effects like nausea or vomiting to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
