Toulouse Oliver Halts Campaign for Lieutenant Governor
She said recent health changes and family commitments led her to step back after winning the Democratic primary with 80% of the vote.
On Thursday, New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver announced she is suspending her campaign for lieutenant governor, citing "recent changes" to her health while continuing to serve as Secretary of State.
Just two weeks after Toulouse Oliver won the Democratic primary in a landslide, capturing 80% of the vote and raising more than $253,000, she suspended her campaign.
Approximately 500 members of the State Central Committee will select a replacement for the Democratic Party of New Mexico ticket, per party rules, shifting the campaign to an internal party vote.
While gubernatorial nominee Deb Haaland will likely influence the choice of a replacement, the New Mexico Republican Party criticized the process, comparing it to the 2024 replacement of former President Joe Biden.
In the November 3 general election, the new Democratic nominee will face Republican candidate Gregg Hull and state Sen. David Gallegos.
