Intel data-leaking Spectre defenses scared off once again

  • Researchers at ETH Zurich discovered a new class of Intel CPU vulnerabilities called Branch Privilege Injection in 2025.
  • The flaws bypass six-year-old Spectre v2 defenses and affect Intel processors from 7th generation Kaby Lake to current models.
  • The exploit leaks sensitive data including kernel secrets and passwords with peak rates of 5.6 KB/sec and 99.8% accuracy.
  • Intel released microcode updates mitigating these flaws with performance impacts ranging from 1.6% to 8.3%, and acknowledged ongoing Spectre challenges.
  • The findings highlight persistent hardware security risks, suggesting that Spectre-related vulnerabilities will continue to require coordinated mitigation efforts.
