Montana National Guard Trains at New 'Drop Zone'

On Monday, April 6, the Montana Air National Guard held its first operational demonstration at the new Vigilante Drop Zone near Power, featuring two C-130 Hercules aircraft conducting a coordinated cargo airdrop.
Funding approved by the Montana Legislature during the 2025 session established the site through a lease-back agreement, allowing the land to serve as both working farmland and a military training area.
Brigadier General Trenton Gibson, Adjutant General for the State of Montana, said the site's proximity to Great Falls allows crews to train locally, reducing travel time and enabling multiple training runs daily.
Senior Airman Liam Flaherty, a C-130 flight engineer, explained that precision is vital for cargo delivery, as crews practice simulating supply drops for forward operating bases and emergency response efforts.
The 120th Airlift Wing plans year-round utilization of the range, with leaders anticipating expanded training opportunities including complex aerial delivery missions and potential joint exercises.
