Whitby Dracula-Themed Bar Approved in Former Post Office
Planning officers said the conversion will not harm the Grade II-listed building and will add an immersive setting tied to Whitby’s Dracula heritage.
On Friday, May 8, North Yorkshire Council approved the conversion of an 18th-century Grade-II listed former post office in Whitby into The Crown Bar, a Bram Stoker-themed venue.
Previously vacant for years, the property at 100 Church Street now invites visitors into a space where "gothic fiction and local heritage collide."
Planning officers confirmed the development respects the Century Grade-II structure; new signage will cover an existing 20th-century fascia sign "which will be retained and concealed."
Despite the approval, Whitby Town Council raised concerns that the proposal "does not appear to provide adequate accessibility or servicing arrangements," citing inadequate step-free routes.
According to the bar's website, the interior is a "moody, immersive setting that feels equal parts museum, storytelling chamber, and late-night haunt," leaning into Whitby's connection with Dracula.
