New Coach Service Linking North and South Wales to Launch
The daily service will link Bangor and Carmarthen in about five and a half hours and will not accept bus passes, officials said.
The Welsh Government confirmed a new daily coach service linking Bangor to Carmarthen will launch this autumn to improve north-south connectivity. The initiative fulfills a 100-day plan commitment to better serve rural communities.
Deputy Transport Minister Mark Hooper described the route as addressing decades of poor public transport in rural communities. The service integrates with existing networks including TrawsCymru and Fflecsi to deliver multi-modal connectivity.
Setting up the service requires a £2m budget, with officials expecting it to reduce travel times to five-and-a-half hours compared to existing options. The route stops at Caernarfon, Porthmadog Rail Station, Dolgellau, Machynlleth, Aberystwyth University, Aberystwyth Bus Station, and Aberaeron.
Analysis indicates about 60% of people surveyed would welcome the service, with officials expecting strong appeal among students and tourists visiting Eryri National Park and Cardigan Bay. The route supports Wales' transition to a greener economy by providing a car alternative.
Transport for Wales plans to integrate the service into the wider T Network in the coming months. Alongside this project, the government announced £8 million to extend £1 bus fares for young people aged 5-21 until March 31, 2027.
