What Does It Mean if a Speed Camera Flashes You? From Speeding Tickets to Points
The UK is rolling out the Jenoptik VECTOR-SR, a new digital speed camera that uses advanced technology to monitor traffic from 2025 onward.
This camera's deployment follows the Safety Camera Partnership's efforts to improve road safety by enforcing speed limits and red-light adherence with enhanced detection capabilities.
The VECTOR-SR acts as a two-way camera capturing vehicles in up to three lanes, detecting not only speeding but also seatbelt use and mobile phone use via infrared technology without requiring road markings.
According to Gareth Thomas from Go Safe, there is no legal requirement for officers to remain visible, and even if an officer were hidden or not in plain sight, the presence of the camera alone serves as an effective deterrent to speeding.
Being flashed by the camera can lead to a fine, points, or a speed awareness course, reflecting the UK law that fines apply as soon as the speed limit is exceeded even by 1 mph.
