New AI Can Help Track Eczema
Researchers reported on May 19, 2025, in the journal Allergy that a new AI can assess eczema severity using smartphone images uploaded by patients.
This AI was trained on 880 eczema images captured by smartphones and developed because eczema requires long-term monitoring and patients often struggle to self-assess severity.
The AI accurately detected 100% of eczema areas and 98% of body parts and showed high agreement with severity scores from dermatologists and allergists.
Dr. Takeya Adachi explained that their AI system enables patients to monitor their eczema severity accurately in real time through a smartphone, which can enhance patient involvement and support better management of the condition.
Researchers concluded this AI can help patients objectively track eczema severity and enable timely treatment adjustments, laying groundwork for future AI-driven dermatology advances.
