New £500 Rule From April 1 Will Help Anyone Parking at Home
- On April 1 the Department for Transport will raise grants for EV chargepoints by more than 40%, enabling renters, flat owners, homeowners and businesses to claim up to 500 for 12 months.
- With zero-emission targets in place, ministers framed the boost as support for wider EV uptake, linking it to the Electric Car Grant that helped over 55,000 drivers, while the UK Government pledges to ban petrol and diesel sales from 2030 and require zero-emission models from 2035.
- Currently the grant ceiling is £350, but the Department for Transport said the £500 limit will typically cover nearly half the cost of installing an EV charger.
- Cutting installation bills, bigger grants mean families, flat owners, renters and small businesses can install a charger for almost half the usual cost, with AA president Edmund King noting VAT rates of 5% at home versus 20% publicly.
- With the scheme entering its final year, officials said the rules will change at the end of this year, and the DfT noted this will be the final year of the grants.
