US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS-based software ecosystem — trial programs running now, first release expected at end of 2027
When the U.S. imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court, it also meant that its chief prosecutor lost access to Microsoft services, forcing the Dutch government to make alternative plans.
The blocking of Microsoft’s services to the CPI’s chief prosecutor turned the alarms on in the Netherlands. DAWO’s initiative seeks for the government to control most of its digital environment, from the operating system to the cloud, with NixOS as its base.
