Chrome Can Finally Stream Netflix in 4K, and Edge Just Lost Bragging Rights

Netflix now supports Ultra HD 2160p in Google Chrome 117 on compatible Windows 11 computers, ending Chrome’s lower-resolution limit for subscribers with the right plan.

  • Netflix now supports 4K streaming in Google Chrome on Windows 11, following the release of Chrome version 117. This update allows Chrome users to access higher-resolution content previously restricted to Microsoft Edge and the Netflix app.
  • Previously, Windows users generally needed Microsoft Edge or the Netflix app to stream at 4K, while Chrome delivered a lower-resolution picture. This limitation had persisted until Chrome's latest update closed the gap.
  • Watching in 4K requires a Netflix Ultra HD plan, a steady connection of at least 15Mbps, and compatible graphics hardware. External connections also need HDCP 2.2 compatibility to support the higher resolution.
  • Chrome dominates many Windows browsing routines, and this 4K support removes one of Microsoft Edge's clearest everyday advantages. Users can now stream Netflix in high resolution without switching browsers.
  • Despite this advancement, Edge remains the stronger browser for Netflix HDR on Windows, and dedicated streaming devices still offer superior quality for high-fidelity viewing across most platforms.
