Netanyahu says Israel accepts Witkoff's new Gaza truce proposal, media report
- The head of Israel’s government, Benjamin Netanyahu, has agreed to a new ceasefire proposal from the United States that includes a 60-day pause in fighting and a prisoner exchange with Hamas aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza.
- The agreement follows more than 18 months of talks brokered by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar amid disputes over a temporary ceasefire and hostages held by Hamas.
- During the proposed 60-day pause, Hamas has offered to free 10 living hostages along with several bodies in return for the release of more than 1,100 Palestinians held by Israel, including around 100 individuals serving long sentences for deadly offenses, as well as demands for a complete Israeli withdrawal and increased humanitarian aid.
- Hamas said it agrees with the general framework aiming for a lasting ceasefire and transfer of Gaza power to a politically independent Palestinian committee, while Israel insists the war ends only after all hostages are freed and Hamas is neutralized.
- The truce could ease Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, where over 54,000 Palestinians have died and 90% of 2 million residents are displaced, but political constraints and coalition threats limit Israel’s flexibility on ending the war.
