Netanyahu reveals direct call with Syrian President Sharaa, claims he stopped Druze massacres
Netanyahu said the brief call came after Israeli strikes and before a ceasefire, as more than 3,572 people were killed in the sectarian clashes, officials said.
- On Thursday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed at a gathering in Yarka that he spoke with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, claiming the conversation stopped massacres of the Druze community.
- Clashes escalated in July 2025 when armed groups affiliated with Sharaa's forces committed violence against the Druze, prompting Israel to strike Syrian regime targets in Damascus and Sweida to protect the community.
- Netanyahu stated, "We took down the Defense Ministry in Damascus," and warned Sharaa that Israel would intensify strikes if violence continued. He added, "I will do whatever it takes to protect our Druze brothers."
- Although Al-Sharaa condemned the massacres and called the Druze "an integral part" of Syria, dozens of abducted men and women remain missing and no one has been brought to justice.
- Defense Minister Israel Katz claimed at the conference that Al-Sharaa will resume attacks on the Druze if Netanyahu is not re-elected, warning the regime is waiting to see election results.
