For Ethan Whitson, who has lived most of his life haunted by the disappearance of his aunt, Michelle Vanek, catharsis has come through suffering. Vanek vanished in the Holy Cross wilderness in 2005 after attempting to take a circuitous route to reach the 14,005-foot peak for which that wilderness is named.
