The glacier collapse that led to devastating flash floods across the Himalayan region of Nepal and its border with the Chinese autonomous region of Tibet on August 26 was preceded by early warning signs, experts say. But monitoring and emergency alert systems in the region are still insufficient to predict such disasters.
Two days before the disaster in Nepal, meltwater from a glacier had turned noticeably brown, and satellite images showed the glacier and surrounding rocks moving faster. Experts now acknowledge that these were the first signs that dangerous changes were taking place in the glacier.
