Nelson tradition will contend with no police support as NPD cites safety concerns
Police say repeated drinking and alcohol-supply issues at the parade-style event created unacceptable risks for students and spectators.
The Nelson Police Department will no longer support the L.V. Rogers Secondary School graduation cavalcade, a tradition requiring municipal approval to proceed downtown.
Citing underage drinking, open liquor in vehicles, and spectators providing alcohol to minors, Deputy Chief Jason Jewkes stated the event is not worth the risk of serious injury or death.
Grade 12 student Sasha Ronan said, "Our entire grad class is pretty upset when we heard the news," while Principal Ian Cooper noted the event has existed for at least 30 years.
Students are collaborating with the LVR Parent Advisory Committee on a proposal for a safer, alcohol-free alternative, and Jewkes indicated the department remains open to discussing potential resolutions.
For the class of 2027, the challenge lies in preserving the tradition while satisfying strict safety requirements, as organizers aim to create a community-focused celebration without dangerous behaviors.
