Aki Iwai Leads and Nelly Korda Struggles in First Round at Evian Women’s Major
Iwai made eight birdies and no bogeys, while Korda fell 11 shots back after a double bogey on her opening hole.
On Thursday, Aki Iwai shot an 8-under 63 to seize a two-stroke lead in the first round of the Evian Championship at Evian-Les-Bains, France.
The Evian Championship serves as the fourth women's major of the season and features a $9.1 million prize money fund at Evian Resort Golf Club.
World number one Nelly Korda struggled with a 3-over 74, finishing 11 strokes behind Iwai, while Frenchwoman Perrine Delacour sits two shots back in second place.
Five players, including Women's PGA Championship winner Haeran Ryu, Mao Saigo, Maja Stark, and Jin Hee, finished at 5-under 66, while Leona Maguire battled back to level par.
Defending her 2023 title, Celine Boutier finished at 5-over 76, placing the champion under pressure to make the cut at Evian.
The only Slovenian representative at the fourth major of the golf season, Ana Balec, finished the opening day with three strokes over par, so she will have to play much better to qualify for the finals on Friday at the Evian course on Lake Geneva in France.
