Nearly 400 Workers to Lose Jobs in Proposed Grangemouth Closure
Syngenta said the site remains too costly to run, despite a joint UK and Scottish Government package and £2.2 million in public funding.
On Thursday, chemical producer Syngenta announced a formal consultation on the potential closure of its Grangemouth site, placing 377 jobs at risk, though the company stressed no final decision has been made.
Syngenta stated the Grangemouth site remains "significantly more expensive to operate than other production sites," citing increasing international competition and challenging energy conditions as primary obstacles.
The company received more than £2 million in Scottish Enterprise funding last year, yet the site operates within the "Grangemouth cluster," Scotland's largest concentration of industry and infrastructure.
Flynn stated the Scottish Government "strongly opposed" the plans and urged the UK Government to release £200m in committed funding, saying "not a single penny has yet been allocated from that fund promised in 2024."
This potential loss follows the closure of the nearby Grangemouth refinery last year, which resulted in about 400 redundancies, adding to decades of steady deindustrialization affecting the town.
